On August 6, 2024, ABB, a global leader in electrification and automation, announced the expansion of its Baldor-Reliance SP4 motor line with new cast-iron models specifically designed for severe-duty applications. These motors achieve NEMA Super Premium efficiency and can further enhance energy savings when paired with variable speed drives. This development is part of ABB’s ongoing commitment to maximizing energy efficiency and reducing operational costs for industries that rely on electric motors.

The newly introduced motors are built to withstand harsh conditions, making them suitable for use in hazardous environments. They have received certifications for Division 2 and Class I Groups A, B, C, D, as well as Class II Groups F and G, indicating their capability to operate safely in areas where explosive gases or combustible dust may be present. The motors also feature an IP55 rating, providing protection against dust and water spray, which is crucial for maintaining performance in dirty or challenging settings.

Brandon Canclini, the global product manager for ABB’s NEMA Motors Division, emphasized the importance of energy efficiency in industrial applications. He stated, “Reducing electricity consumption benefits communities, businesses, and the environment.” The SP4 motors are designed to reduce motor losses by as much as 20%, leading to significant energy savings and extending the life of the motors. This is particularly relevant as more than 80% of industrial electric motors operate direct-on-line, independent of a drive.

The SP4 motor line includes a range of durable options tailored for various severe-duty applications, including pumps, fans, compressors, and conveyors. The new cast-iron models cover a power range from 25 to 300 horsepower, while the previously launched rolled steel models are available from ¼ to 20 horsepower. This versatility allows companies across different industries to find suitable solutions that meet their specific operational needs.

All SP4 models are designed for easy replacement of existing NEMA motors, whether for simple direct-start setups or more complex variable speed operations. Each motor comes with a standard 48-month warranty, ensuring reliability and peace of mind for users. The ability to seamlessly replace older units with SP4 motors offers a straightforward path for companies looking to upgrade their systems and improve energy efficiency.

Moreover, the SP4 motors comply with current U.S. Department of Energy efficiency standards. Upcoming Medium Electric Motor regulations, set to take effect on June 1, 2027, will require motors up to 100 horsepower to meet NEMA Premium efficiency and those between 100 and 250 horsepower to achieve NEMA Super Premium efficiency. ABB’s proactive approach in developing the SP4 line positions the company favorably to meet these future regulatory demands.

ABB continues to innovate in the field of electrification and automation, striving to create sustainable solutions that optimize manufacturing processes and energy use. With over 140 years of expertise, ABB’s commitment to advancing motor technology through the Baldor-Reliance SP4 line exemplifies its dedication to enhancing energy efficiency and supporting industries in their transition toward a more sustainable future.
